We specialize in strategic planning, program and pilot design, market assessments, and go-to market strategies for firms, organizations, and governmental agencies interested in developing new ways to promote sustainability and decarbonization.
Our unique strength lies in assisting clients with the development of new programs, products and services that promote triple bottom-line outcomes (fostering socially and environmentally beneficial outcomes in a financially sustainable way) by offering strategic direction in the face of market uncertainty and complexity.
We have seen firsthand how well-designed programs, products, services and strategies can benefit people, profit and planet. But we have also seen how the complexity of attempting to promote each of these three elements in tandem can lead to poor designs and inertia. Our Focus
A particular focus of TBL Growth Advisors is ensuring all communities benefit from the rapid changes occurring in the energy sector. These changes present significant opportunities for wealth creation, altering how communities use energy, and reorienting where their energy comes from – all of which impact how much capital flows outside of their communities and how much recirculates within them.
Our Mission
Our mission is to find ways to keep these funds local and use this investment to promote positive social, environmental and wealth creating outcomes.
A good example comes from founder Joel Freehling’s work promoting e-bike purchase at local stores across the country – in doing so, local communities measurably reduced carbon output by incentivizing a switch from car usage to e-bikes, while also lowering transportation costs for tens of thousands of income qualified households and fostering tens of millions in local economic activity.

Experience and Impact
Much of his work has focused on driving investment and capital towards carbon reduction efforts in the building and transportation sectors.
During his 25+ year professional career, he has assisted clients with investment totaling upwards of $3 billion for decarbonization and green building efforts, with the lion’s share flowing to disadvantaged communities and households.
His expertise spans energy finance, building decarbonization and micro-mobility, and crosses strategy, product development, marketing and business development.
Leadership and Industry Involvement
Joel has served on many nonprofit boards, including, most recently, his appointment to the Clean Energy Jobs and Justice Fund by Governor Pritzker.
He is assisting this de-novo community-focused green bank with its launch and programmatic development to ensure all communities throughout Illinois benefit from the clean energy economy.
In his numerous board roles, he has also assisted numerous other industry-leading organizations in their early stages, including the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance and Illinois Green Alliance.
He has written widely on energy finance, including leading white papers for the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and has served as Co-Chair of ACEEE’s Energy Efficiency

Joel Freehling
Founder Joel Freehling brings more than 25 years of experience building triple bottom line companies and creating and scaling programs, products and services that promote sustainable outcomes, while driving revenue growth, profitability, and social impact.
He has served as both the internal sustainability officer to a leading community development financial institution as well as an outside consultant to firms of all sizes, in a wide array of sectors, and at differing points in their sustainability journey.
